Trucko De Mayo - May 5, 2012

For those of you who love DC Food Trucks as much as I do, I am pleased to share with you some great news.  If you enjoyed last year's monthly Truckeroos at the Nationals Stadium, they are back for Trucko De Mayo in celebration of Cinco De Mayo.

Below is the announcement I received from the event organizer...

In about a week, the Washington, DC Food Trucks Association (DCFTA) is organizing ‘Curbside Cookoff: Trucko De Mayo’ - the largest DC food truck festival yet. Trucko De Mayo will have more than 40 food trucks, two bars, live music, and more. Better yet, there’s a sweepstakes with many prizes including a pass for a free lunch at each of the 45 DCFTA food trucks, a Kindle Fire, and more.

Join us Saturday May 5 from 11:30am to 9pm for ‘Curbside Cookoff: Trucko De Mayo’ at RFK stadium.

As always the event is free. And this year you will have even more choices, because there will be more trucks.

All of us on the food trucks are so excited for this event. We all love festivals like this. And the chance to do it again is so exciting. So I hope you join us at RFK Stadium on the 5th. We’re going to have a good time.

Truckeroo is Back!!!

In case you missed Truckeroo in July, it's back for August and is supposed to continue monthly through October. Make sure you swing by Das Bullpen at the National's Stadium (Half St.and M Street SE across from the Navy Yard Metro station) on Friday, August 12 from 11:00AM - 11:00PM for this expo of food trucks.

At last month's Truckeroo, there were over 25 food trucks. My friend and I arrived around 7:00 and walked around to check out all of the vendors.

We decided to get in line for Takorean. They had the longest line by far, so we figured it had to be good? I have to say I wasn't completely sold. The bulgogi taco was pretty tasty but the chicken lacked seasoning. I was hoping to try the pork one as well, but after an hour and 15 minutes of waiting as soon as we reached the window, they had sold out. I wish I could say they were worth the wait, but I can't. Hey, you win some, you lose some.

We also tried the arepas from Sabora. The line was by far shorter and the arepa with a side of Latin slaw was delicious. I like the arepas at Cube Libra but this one was definitely heartier and less expensive. I'll be adding Sabora to my Twitter timeline so I can definitely take advantage of the next time they are parked by my office.

My advice is to go with a group of friends and each of you wait in line for something different. This way you have a chance to divide and conquer. Also, bring cash (there's a Bank of America ATM about 2 blocks away). Many of the food trucks were not accepting credit cards so cash is King there.

Volunteers Needed
The food trucks need volunteer canvassers on August 12th. Food provided. Please email them at volunteer@dcfoodtrucks.org.

Food Trucks in the City

So word on the street is the next food truck extravaganza will be held this Friday, July 15th. I heard the last one was something that shouldn't be missed so I'm hoping to take full advantage.

According to their website, over 18,000 hungry people showed up to our first Truckeroo and all the food trucks had their busiest day since they have been in business.

The event is hosted by Truckeroo and will be held Friday, July 15th from 11:00 AM - 9:00PM at Half and M Street, SE across from Navy Yard Metro Station. You can expect to see 20-25 Food Trucks as well as listen to live music.

Admission is FREE!

Food Truck Review: Red Hook Lobster Truck

Let me first begin by saying, I was always a snob when it came to food trucks. Typically, when I'd see them in the past, I'd turn my nose up and say I'm not eating from somewhere where there's no sink for the people preparing my food to wash their hands or use the bathroom. Well times have changed.

A few months ago, I heard there was a new food truck coming to DC that's speciality was Maine lobster. Being that I L-O-V-E all things with shrimp and lobster, the thought of it made me drool with excitement.

After reading their daily tweets (@LobsterTruckDC) and seeing their launch pushed further and further back, the anticipation had died down and I'd forgotten all about them. A little while ago, I just happened to see a tweet from an associate of mine who works down the street saying the truck was going to be in our area. I figured this was finally my chance.

She ended up not going but I didn't allow that to dissuade me. I walked over to McPherson Square to see what all the fuss was about. That day it was extremely cold so I figured the line couldn't be that long. Wrong!

The truck got there at 11:00 and by the time I got there around 1:00 there were still a good 20-25 people in line in front of me. I ended up chatting it up with a older Polish woman which made my 30 minute or so wait go by a little faster.

I finally got up to the window and ordered the Lobster Roll Connecticut-style, meaning it didn't have mayonnaise and was drizzled in butter instead of being creamy. I couldn't wait to get back to my office to see if it was really worth the wait. Let me tell you, it was sooo worth it. The bread was perfectly toasted and the roll had just the right amount of lobster. I'd say there were 5 or 6 large lobster claws in it. It was succulent and seasoned just right with a slight lemon and butter taste. It ate every last morsel.

In addition to the roll I ordered, they had a mayo-based one (Maine-style), Shrimp Rolls, clam chowder (I'm guessing that's just for the winter since it's not listed on their website), whoopie pies from Maine, Cape Cod chips (I love the Sea Salt & Vinegar) and Maine Root sodas.

If you have a chance to catch up to the Red Hook Lobster Truck, I say go for it. Make sure you follow them on Twitter so you'll know when they'll be in your area. Thanks to the Lobster Truck, I have to say I am no longer a food truck snob and I'm sure you will definitely not be disappointed.
